Symposium - A grand success!

On April 30, The Sterling Institute hosted its last event of the 2011/2012 season, the TARGET Symposium. It was an incredible afternoon, full of rich dialogue surrounding best teaching practices for students. Ten groups presented action research that they have completed, which ranged in topics from mindfulness, assessment, and sleep habits to financial literacy. Karen Grose, the Toronto District School Board's System Superintendent of Program, spoke to the group of academic leaders, heads of schools, and teachers about the ever-changing educational world in which we work. She illustrated how important it is that teachers move from 'sage on the stage' to collaborating and creating knowledge with students. At the end of the inspiring afternoon, it was clear that there are many brilliant minds conducting research in their very own classrooms, working to change the paradigm of teaching and learning.

TARGET Members Involved in International Action Research Program

Trish Cislak - TARGET Member since 2003 - has taken on the role of Team Advisor for the 2012-2013 International Boys' Schools Coalition Action Research Program.  Trish has contributed to 'Ask Me' (a TARGET original product), completed an action research project on Sharkopoly (a grammar board game for grades 3-5), and an IBSC project on the role audio books play in the pleasure reading habits of boys.  She firmly believes her time within the TARGET group has given her the experience to take on such a role and provide guidance to colleagues undertaking action research, many for the first time.  Trish's team is comprised of 14 educator's from boys' schools all over the world.

Erica Sprules, current Chair of TARGET's steering committee, will be taking part in the IBSC's action research program this year. She began participating in the TARGET program in 2003, completing an action research project on parent involvement in character and guidance education programs. Erica is currently completing a project on communication methods utilized during hands-on problem-solving activities in the science classroom, and will extend this work through the IBSC's program next year.

In addition, current TARGET members Alex Shum (Royal St. George's College School) and Ian Fisher (Crescent School) will also be participating in the IBSC's international action research program. All projects will be related to boys, technology, and creativity.
